Welcome to Colorado

The Wild Bunch

Cellblock

The original cell block.

Concrete and brick with vaulted ceilings. Not much ventilation and little heat!

The newer block constructed of steel. There was a better heating system but smaller cells.

Wyoming Territorial Prison

A prison from the late 1800’s until 1903. There were some interesting inmates including Butch Cassidy.

Early prisoner transport.

Oregon Trail Wagon Ruts

We have been here before but since it was on the way we decided to stop again.

How many wagons had to pass this spot to rut the trail that deep?

3 Sisters Restaurant in Manville, WY

It’s literally the only business in town (and for miles in all directions) and some of the best diner food anywhere! We decided to indulge in the Chocolate Chip Cookie pie. It was divine!

And even more fun- we have been here many times!

Welcome to Wyoming

Ali is the only one going to Wyoming… Not really- Jim is driving and Sam cashed in her “I’m staying in the car” pass. She earned it when she was willing to get out in Wauconda and Ali wasn’t. The enthusiasm for state signs is overwhelming. 97 degrees and windy didn’t help!

Bison

Or as they are fondly called around here - Fluffy Cows. A big herd with lots of babies. (The babies really do look like cows!)

This crew was a few miles away on a windy stretch of road. We watched them run to meet up with the rest of the group.

The Needles Highway

A narrow winding road through the needles formations in Custer State Park. The road engineers had fun designing this one. One lane tunnels, narrow bridges, 10mph curves, and incredible views!

She was trying to point to the tunnel.

Thank you!

We had a fantastic visit with Yogi, Dana, and Miles! Thanks so much for your hospitality!

Cookies

After seeing the sign above Dana‘s stove, Sam decided she needed to make cookies. Her version of the double chocolate peanut butter chip cookies that Yumi made were to die for!

Ice Cream

Biking + hot day = ice cream

Remnants of the railroad

We like this section of the trail because it’s downhill. No pedaling on the way back so the girls were gone!

Crazyhorse

A distant view. It’s hard to get perspective on the size from this far. We are about 1.5 - 2 miles away. The head is 87 feet tall!

The Michelson Trail

A rails to trails bike path the goes from Deadwood and 109 miles south. We did a very small portion- from Custer about 5.5 miles north until we got a view of Crazyhorse.

Yogi & Dana

We made it here, had a wonderful dinner, and now it’s time for dessert!

More Mt Rushmore views

The highway was built in such way to give the most Mount Rushmore views as possible. It’s kind of an engineering marvel!

Tunnel View

Several tight tunnels on the pigtail highway. It’s hard to see in the photos, but there are views of Mt. Rushmore as you come through.

Keystone, SD

Another good spot for ice cream!
